Design Your Own Container Like a Pro

Designing a stunning container is easier than you think! With just a few simple steps, you can create a professional-looking arrangement using the Thriller, Filler, and Spiller Method.

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a tiny apartment balcony, containers add beauty and allure to any space. They’re perfect for beginner gardeners since they’re relatively easy to care for, and they’re a great option for those who travel during the summer but still want to enjoy gardening at home. (Just be sure to have someone stop by and water or invest in a self watering container!)

Choosing the Right Location

Before you start planting, think about where your container will go. Consider:

  • Sunlight – How many hours of direct sun does the spot receive?
  • Wind exposure – Is it in a sheltered area or an open, breezy spot?
  • Viewing angle – Will your container be seen from all sides, or just the front?

If your planter will be up against a wall or fence, opt for a “faced” arrangement, where taller plants are placed at the back and shorter ones in front. If it’s visible from all angles, go for a “round” arrangement that looks great from every direction.

The Thriller, Filler & Spiller Method

Once you’ve picked the perfect location, it’s time to choose your plants! Our simple three-step method makes it easy:

Step 1: Thriller

The thriller is the focal point of your arrangement—the plant that draws the eye and provides height and structure. You can even use vines on trellises to add extra height.

Step 2: Filler

The filler plants surround the thriller, adding volume, color, and texture. This is where you can get creative with different foliage and blooms! You might choose vibrant flowers like begonias and small dahlias or go for interesting foliage like coleus. Even ornamental cabbage or basil can create a striking, modern look.

Step 3: Spiller

The spiller consists of trailing plants that cascade over the edge of the pot, adding movement and softness to your arrangement. We often use three different spillers for different textures and colours.

Designing Your Container

Creating your own container should be fun, not overwhelming! If you’re not sure where to start, simply pick one plant you love—it can be a thriller, filler, or spiller—and build your arrangement around it.

For example, if you fall in love with a certain coleus, use that as the base for your color scheme. No need to pull out a color wheel—just grab what inspires you and walk around the greenhouse to find complementary plants. The key is to make sure they share similar light requirements. If you’re unsure, ask our staff for guidance. But after that? Have fun, create something you love, and make it full and beautiful!

How to Plant Your Container

Step 1: Prepare Your Pot

Begin by filling your container with high-quality potting soil, such as Wallish Custom Soil Blend, leaving about three inches of space from the top. Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing the right soil—it's a crucial factor in the success of your planter. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask our staff or consult someone with experience in container planting for their recommendations. Before removing plants from their pots, arrange them on top of the soil to finalize the layout.

Step 2: Plant in This Order

  • Thriller – Loosen the roots, dig a hole, and place it in. Avoid compressing or pushing down on the soil, as this can remove air pockets that hold moisture.
  • Filler – Loosely tie up your thriller to get it out of the way for planting your fillers. Position these around the thriller, turning each plant to face its best side outward.
  • Spiller – Tuck these between the fillers so they trail nicely over the pot’s edge.

After planting, top up the soil so it’s about one inch below the rim—this leaves space for watering.

Step 3: Water Immediately!

Watering after planting is crucial to prevent transplant shock, wilting, and nutrient loss. Be sure to water at the soil level rather than over the leaves and flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

To keep your container thriving all season long, regular feeding is key! Here’s a basic guide:

  • Slow-release fertilizer – Mix into the soil at planting time for long-lasting nutrients.
  • Liquid & Water Soluble fertilizer – Apply every 1-2 weeks, particularly for flowering plants. Our top recommendation is Nature's Source, as it’s easy to use and will not cause salt buildup. We also offer a variety of other options, including organic fertilizers.

And there you have it! You’ve designed and planted your very own stunning container. Now, grab a lemonade, sit back, and admire the beauty of your hard work!
